Thinking - Technical Safeguarding

Technical Safeguarding for the aviation industry Development in the vicinity of airports has to be controlled to ensure that the safety and effectiveness of the air operations are not impaired. Therefore, it is essential that any proposed building developments are assessed to ensure that there is no or limited effect on the airport operation. If safeguarding is not undertaken then it is likely that a gradual degradation of the integrity of Airport Air Navigation Equipment (AANE) radio and radar signals will take place. This will be perceived in several ways; for example, complaints from pilots or ATC regarding poor coverage, increased background noise etc. This can be avoided by proactively safeguarding the technical sites. In the UK, the Safety Regulation Group (SRG) of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) publishes the requirements for technical safeguarding (CAP 670), and makes the Air Traffic Service (ATS) provider responsible for ensuring that developments do not impact on the safety of the ATS environment. The regulating authority will expect to see evidence of adequate technical safeguarding. If the quality of service of the radio and radar signals reduces below acceptable limits, the approval can be withdrawn until corrective measures have been taken.
