Thinking - Safety Management System
ATM Safety Management Systems (SMS) are essential to maintain the integrity
of the Aerospace Industry and reassure the travelling public that their
safety is the No. 1 priority, over and above any other consideration. Safety
work is often viewed as specialist, particularly with respect to Safety
Cases. At Cyrrus we are able to support organisations across the full
range of safety activities, from ad hoc support, to in-house projects,
through to full SMS and complex ‘multiple system’ Safety
Cases. Our approach is to ensure we bring the very best technical
expertise allied firmly to an operational focus. To that end we
often partner with a specialist company, expert in the development of
complex ATM safety cases.
Why Cyrrus
- Because Cyrrus offers the following benefits:
We have developed a strong track record in the successful delivery
of safety cases;
- Our team strikes the right balance between engineering expertise
and operational focus. Therefore, while we fully understand the
complexities of a Project, we never lose sight of the operational
benefits being sought;
- We have developed a pragmatic approach to safety case development
that is less intrusive for customers yet still highly acceptable
to the regulator;
Recent Projects:
- GBAS Approaches (Norway). The Cyrrus Team have
recently completed a safety case, on behalf of Avinor (Norway),
for the worlds first GPS ground based augmentation landing
system. This Project won the industry award
for Enabling Future Technology at Jane’s ATC Global Awards
2008.
- Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield (RHADS) - Radar. Cyrrus
have been contracted, inter alia, to develop the safety
case for the introduction of a new Primary Surveillance Radar
(PSR) capability to serve RHADS. This is a highly complex
and challenging project, which includes: the
transmission of PSR data from Doncaster Airport to the Approach
Control Room at Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA), integration
with a remote SSR feed provided by NATS and introduction of
new Radar Display Processors featuring the first UK application
of a Microsoft XP Operating System. The Cyrrus Team is also
contracted to develop the Safety Case for the overall LJLA
Radar System that provides the centralized approach control
services for LJLA and RHADS.
- Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield (RHADS) - Voice
and Data Communication System. RHADS are also
upgrading their communication systems in order to meet
the integrity requirements for the potential establishment
of Controlled Airspace (CAS). This project requires the
integration of the Air-Ground-Air communication provision
on the aerodrome at RHADS with the Approach Control Room
located at LJLA. The Cyrrus Team are developing the Safety
Case for the system which features Main, Standby and Emergency
Transmitters and Receivers and a new Voice Switch, as well
as diverse routing of Intersite links.
- Kerry Airport (Republic of Ireland). Seeking
to upgrade the airport Kerry, contracted Cyrrus to conduct
a feasibility study of runway extension options and the viability
of developing IAP’s to a proposed Cat 1 ILS. This
Project included technical analysis and development of a safety
assessment to prove the concept. This was a difficult
project due primarily to very challenging terrain around
the airport. Cyrrus liaised extensively with the Irish Aviation
Authority to find a mutually acceptable solution. Our
findings have been accepted and the construction contract has
recently been awarded.
