Thinking - Radar Flight Calibration Analysis

Much of the work to evaluate the performance of new or refurbished surveillance radar is done using ‘Targets of Opportunity’ traffic.  However, before the equipment can enter operational service, the final stage of System Testing is to use a dedicated calibration aircraft of known radar cross section characteristics to perform a series of flights to establish the effectiveness of the radar system.  This can be a very significant part of the overall cost of commissioning a radar system.  It is therefore vital to design these tests so that they can produce the data required, cost effectively, to enable a proper assessment of the radar’s performance against both the regulatory and technical requirements.  Reliable data collection is obviously essential to ensure a satisfactory outcome.  This is achieved through attention to detail and an understanding of the technical risks present during the test programme.  This test programme produces a huge amount of data that needs to be carefully assimilated and accurately assessed.  Cyrrus has the tools with the capability of handling this data, plus the expertise to use these tools effectively to extract meaningful and trustworthy results.  The output permits us to make an overall assessment that will be recognised by the regulatory authorities.  The results also inform the safety case and provide a reference benchmark for the lifetime of the equipment.
